Beach Escape North of the Border: Why Leamington & Point Pelee Should Be Your Next Weekend Getaway

Looking for a quick beach escape or a refreshing day trip that’s just far enough to feel like an adventure—but not so far that it requires a full travel itinerary? Say hello to Leamington, Ontario, and the stunning Point Pelee National Park, located just across the border from Michigan. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a spontaneous weekender, this charming Canadian destination has all the ingredients for a relaxing retreat: sandy beaches, lush trails, award-winning wineries and breweries, and even a warm welcome for your four-legged friend.

Just a Hop Across the Border
Leamington is just a short drive from Detroit, and Point Pelee National Park is only a few minutes beyond that—making both spots easily accessible for a day trip or a rejuvenating weekend stay. Best part? If you're a Michigan resident without a passport, you’re not out of luck. An Enhanced Michigan Driver’s License (EDL) allows you to cross the U.S.–Canada border by land or sea, so you can keep your plans spontaneous and stress-free.

Sand, Trails & Sunsets at Point Pelee
Point Pelee National Park is one of Canada’s southernmost points and is famed for its unique geography. A narrow peninsula stretches out into Lake Erie, forming breathtaking beaches and wetlands. Whether you're into birdwatching, kayaking, hiking, or simply lounging on the sand, Point Pelee delivers. Sunsets here are some of the best you’ll ever see.

Bonus: It’s dog-friendly! Your furry travel companion can enjoy the trails and beach with you, as long as they’re on a leash. There are even designated pet-friendly beach areas so no member of the family misses out on the fun.

Sip Your Way Through Essex County
After a morning of nature and lake breezes, treat yourself to a tasting tour through Essex County’s wine country. This region is home to some of Ontario’s most scenic and welcoming wineries. From the estate-grown reds of Pelee Island Winery to lakeside sips at Colchester Ridge Estate Winery, there’s something for every palate.

Craft beer lovers will also find plenty to cheer about. Stop by The Grove Brew House in Kingsville or GL Heritage Brewing Co. in Amherstburg for local brews that pair perfectly with Ontario summer vibes. Many of these locations have patios, live music, and small bites—ideal for winding down after a day of outdoor exploration.

Make It a Day Trip or a Long Weekend
With so much packed into a compact, accessible region, Leamington and Point Pelee are perfect for both day trips and weekend getaways. You can camp, book a cozy lakeside Airbnb, or stay in one of Leamington’s charming inns.

So if you’re craving a dose of nature, a glass of local wine, and some quality beach time—all without hopping on a plane—consider heading north. Ontario’s southern shore is waiting, and it’s closer than you think.

Pro tip: Don’t forget to check border crossing hours and bring your Enhanced Michigan ID or passport if you have one. The CDC does require you to fill out paperwork if you are bringing pets back into the USA, but it's quick. Learn more here.

And yes, there are plenty of photo ops for you and your pup at Point Pelee’s iconic southern tip sign!

Why Gdańsk & Sopot Are Central Europe’s Best-Kept Summer Secrets A personal journey to Poland's Baltic coast — and why you should go too. For decades, the region we now call Central Europe was commonly referred to as Eastern Europe — a Cold War hangover that stuck in people’s minds long after borders shifted and times changed. But if you glance at the map, it’s clear: cities like Gdańsk and Sopot sit smack in the heart of Europe, nestled along the stunning Polish Baltic coast. And let me tell you — this part of the world is finally getting the recognition it deserves. For me, though, it’s more than just a hidden gem. It’s home. A Return to My Roots Gdańsk and Sopot are more than beautiful beach towns to me — they’re part of my family’s ancestral story. (For my family, this is the Ewald side. Gdansk was once part of Germany.) Walking along the cobbled streets of Gdańsk’s Old Town or feeling the sea breeze on Sopot’s famous wooden pier isn’t just a vacation — it’s a journey through memory, heritage, and identity. But in recent years, I’ve noticed something: others are starting to fall in love with this place too. And it’s easy to see why. Gdańsk: A City of History, Resilience, and Golden Charm Gdańsk is a city like no other. With its colorful facades, amber shops, and maritime roots, it tells a story of strength and reinvention. Wander through Long Market (Długi Targ), where the Neptune Fountain and Gothic-style buildings transport you to another era. Visit the European Solidarity Centre, honoring the birthplace of the Solidarity movement and Poland’s role in reshaping Europe’s future. Cruise the Motława River, with views of medieval cranes and modern museums side by side. It’s rich in history, but it’s not stuck in the past. Gdańsk is lively, creative, and filled with a kind of quiet pride — and delicious pierogi. Sopot: Poland’s Seaside Playground Just a quick train ride from Gdańsk, Sopot is the seaside resort town you didn’t know you needed. Think wide beaches, trendy cafes, and the longest wooden pier in Europe. It's got that elegant old-world spa-town charm with a splash of modern luxury. From family-friendly fun to romantic evenings with sea views, Sopot is where Poland goes to unwind — and where savvy travelers are starting to show up, too. Why You Should Go Now While Paris, Rome, and Barcelona get all the summer love, cities like Gdańsk and Sopot offer something just as special — without the crowds and the price tag. You’ll find: Affordable hotels and boutique stays World-class food (don’t skip the fresh fish and local beer!) Deep, layered history with stunning architecture A chance to experience Europe from a fresh, less touristy perspective And yes, sandy beaches and warm summer nights included. If you’re dreaming of something a little different this year — something beautiful, meaningful, and just a bit under the radar — consider heading to Poland’s Baltic coast. I promise: you’ll come home with more than just photos. You’ll come home with a story. Ready to explore Central Europe’s best-kept secret? A small town with a clock tower in the middle of it

Hey travelers! If a pint in a London pub or a stroll through the Scottish Highlands is on your summer itinerary, you’ll want to read this first. Starting January 2025, the United Kingdom has rolled out a new travel requirement for U.S. visitors — and if you show up at the airport without it, you won’t be getting on that plane. 😬 But don’t worry — I’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know about the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) and how to breeze through the process like a seasoned globetrotter. What’s the Big Change? As of this year, U.S. citizens must apply for an ETA before visiting the UK — even for a short vacation, business trip, or a quick layover. Think of it as the UK’s version of the U.S. ESTA program. So whether you're catching a West End show in London or hopping over to Belfast for a weekend, you’ll need to apply online before you go. What Exactly Is an ETA? The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a digital permission linked to your passport. It’s: Required for all U.S. travelers (yes, even kids) Valid for up to 2 years or until your passport expires Allows multiple short trips (up to 6 months at a time) And good news — it only costs £10 (about $12.50)! How to Apply (It’s Easy!) Go to the official UK site or download the UK ETA app (iOS & Android). Fill in your info: passport details, photo, travel plans. Pay the fee. Wait — most approvals come in under 72 hours, but don’t cut it close. Travel advisor tip: Apply at least a week before your trip, just in case. What Else Should You Prepare? Besides your ETA, here’s what you’ll want to check off: ✔️ Passport validity – Make sure it’s valid for the entire trip. ✔️ Return or onward ticket – Immigration may ask. ✔️ Proof of funds – Show you can support yourself during your stay. ✔️ Travel insurance – Not required, but strongly recommended. ✔️ Register with STEP – That’s the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. It’s a free way to get embassy alerts and stay safe. What Happens If You Skip the ETA? Airlines will not let you board without an approved ETA — even if you're just connecting through the UK. Don't be that traveler stuck at the gate watching your vacation disappear. Final Boarding Call This new rule might sound like a hassle, but the process is quick and affordable. Just think of it as a pre-departure checklist item, right next to packing your adapter and double-checking your hotel reservations. And of course, if you need help with the application, planning your UK adventure, or building the perfect itinerary — I’m here to make it stress-free. Let’s get you across the pond and exploring castles, coastlines, and cozy tea shops in no time. – Bridget, The Wandering Sociologist- Independent Travel Advisor
